Puzzle Cards in ABC Go: How We Made Learning More Challenging and Fun
After solving the problem of simple 3D cards with no real engagement, we faced the next exciting challenge: how to make the play process deeper and more rewarding for children.
The answer came naturally.
Children love puzzles.
Puzzles are more than just entertainment. They develop cognitive abilities, problem-solving skills, and improve concentration. We decided to take this timeless concept and integrate it into ABC Go in a fresh and meaningful way.
Turning Cards Into Puzzles
Instead of showing one simple card, we broke cards into parts. Now, children are not only watching — they are assembling. This added a new layer of thinking: before seeing the AR magic, they must solve a mini-puzzle.
This step is incredibly important. It forces kids to:
- observe carefully
- compare shapes and colors
- make decisions on how pieces fit together
Technical Challenges and Smart Solutions
Of course, making this work in AR was not easy. Traditional AR libraries often recognize an object even from half of its shape, which ruined the puzzle idea. For example, showing just half a chicken might already trigger the animation. That wasn’t good enough for us.
We decided to make each puzzle piece unique, using special marks, textures, and background elements. This way, the system could recognize individual parts and only combine them when the child correctly assembled the puzzle.
But even then, we needed to be flexible. Children don’t always align puzzle pieces perfectly — and they shouldn’t have to. That’s why we programmed the system to be forgiving, accepting small gaps or slight angles. When the puzzle feels complete to a child, that’s when the AR comes alive.
Why This Matters
This concept does much more than entertain. It rewards effort, encourages persistence, and improves fine motor skills. It also strengthens the emotional connection to the game, because solving puzzles feels meaningful and satisfying.
With this simple idea, ABC Go makes every learning session more interactive, more challenging, and much more fun.
